
Keeping Things Safe with Gold-Coated IR Lamps in Wet Processes
When you’re working with semiconductor chemical cleaning, you’re basically dancing with volatile, flammable solvents. It’s a high-stakes environment. If you just throw a standard infrared lamp in there, you’re essentially inviting a fire to start. That’s why we lean on gold-coated quartz lamps with some very specific sealing. It keeps the sparks away from the chemicals and stops corrosion from eating your gear.
Why Gold and Quartz?
First off, the gold layer. It’s not about looking fancy. The gold actually acts like a mirror, pushing all that infrared energy forward right onto the wafer. The best part? It keeps the heat from bouncing backward into the housing and frying your electrical connections. Then there’s the quartz. We use it because it can take a beating. You can cycle the power on and off, and the glass won’t just crack under the stress. But quartz has a quirk—it’s porous. In a chemical lab, vapors can try to sneak in or chew through the surface.
Locking Down Hazardous Zones
To make sure no sparks or heat leaks hit those flammable vapors, we seal the lamp ends tight. We use high-temp epoxy or ceramic seals where the electrodes sit. Think of it as a physical wall between the live filament and the air around it. We build these to be completely airtight. If a seal does fail, the halogen gas leaks out and the filament pops instantly. It sounds bad, but it’s actually the goal. A quick “pop” is way safer than a slow leak that lets dangerous gases seep inside the lamp housing.
The Trade-offs
Here’s the deal: gold-coated lamps hit much harder and faster than clear quartz. Your ramp-up times drop, which is great for throughput. But it comes with a price. Gold isn’t cheap, and the coating is delicate. One bad scratch during installation and you’ve got “hot spots,” which means your heating becomes uneven. Also, tell your techs toalwayswear gloves. Skin oils are the enemy here. If they touch the quartz, those oils bake into the glass at high wattage, and the whole tube fails. Not a fun way to spend a Tuesday.
